Mon, Feb 12, 2018 3:03 pm

Boston City FC will kick off the 2018 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) season at home to New York Cosmos B on Saturday, May 5 at 7pm ET at Malden Catholic High School.

Boston City will feature in an 11-team North Atlantic Conference in the Northeast Region, with each team playing the other once.  A random draw established the home and away opponents.

In addition to the visit of the Cosmos, Brooklyn Italians, Hartford City FC, Greater Lowell and Seacoast United Mariners will all come to Brother Gilbert Stadium.  The Lions will travel to reigning NPSL champion Elm City FC and to Kingston Stockade, New York Athletic Club, Rhode Island Reds and TSF.

The top four teams in the single-table standings will advance to the North Atlantic Conference playoff semifinals.  The winners will meet to claim one of three places in the Northeast Region finals and will be joined by a wild card team with the best regular season record from among the losing finalists in the region.  The regional champion will advance to compete in the NPSL national semifinals and final.

The rivalries

The 2018 kickoff on May 5 will be the third consecutive season the Lions have faced Cosmos B at Malden Catholic High School to open a new campaign.  In 2016, the first-ever Boston City FC match saw an early home lead canceled out as the visitors earned a 3-1 win.  In 2017, the sides drew 1-1, while the only meeting in New York saw Boston City emerge as 3-2 victors in 2016.Historic Brooklyn Italians visit on June 3, resuming a series last played in 2016 when the Lions suffered a 5-2 away defeat, but gained revenge at home in a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Hartford City visit on June 9 to continue a tied series that featured three thrilling matches last season, establishing a firm rivalry between the clubs.  The Lions won 3-1 at home through an Isaac Nana Addai hat trick and drew 3-3 away, but suffered a NPSL Playoffs exit in a 2-1 defeat at home.

Seacoast United Mariners will visit on June 23, with Boston City having won all four previous matches between the teams.  A 2-1 away win in 2016 was followed by a 1-0 home victory, then last season the Lions romped to a 6-1 home win.  Two late goals in the 87th and 93rd minutes from Homero Morais and Michael Rincon stole a 3-1 victory in Portland.

Boston City will face Greater Lowell NPSL FC in a cross-state local derby for the first time on a date to be confirmed.  The Lions have faced a different Lowell team before in the NPSL, when in 2016 a dramatic last-second Gilly Desouza goal capped a comeback from 2-1 down to win 3-2, but a 2-1 defeat in the return match caused Boston City to go on the road in the NPSL playoffs.

The rivalry established with last season’s divisional champion Kingston Stockade will resume on June 20 in Kingston.  The Lions won a thrilling clash 3-2 at Dietz Stadium in 2016 and completed the double by beating the Stockade 2-0 at home during a nine-match unbeaten run to the playoffs.  Last season, Kingston triumphed 2-1 at home before the Lions gained revenge with a 2-0 win to close out the regular season.
