Inside The Numbers: Three Seasons Of Records

It’s 2019 and Boston City FC is approaching a new National Premier League Soccer season, which will be the fourth in club history. Here’s a look inside the numbers at some of the milestones the club and Lions players have reached since that opening 2016 campaign.

Boston City’s biggest win came in the fourth game of the 2017 season as visitors Seacoast United Mariners suffered a miserable visit to Brother Gilbert Stadium, losing 6-1. Having inadvertently traveled down from Maine without their uniforms, the visitors were able to borrow an emergency kit from the Malden Catholic soccer team but found themselves two goals down inside the opening 20 minutes. On his way to claiming a hat-trick, Jhonata Batista opened the scoring after 17 minutes then turned provider for Kevin Herrera to double the advantage three minutes later. Herrera’s second came seven minutes after the interval, Batista made it 4-1 after Thomas Urquhart had pulled one back for the Mariners then Michael Rincon and Batista completed the rout. Midfielder Isaac Addai was involved in all six goals and provided four assists.

By contrast, the Lions have twice struggled against the Brooklyn Italians, who inflicted the heaviest defeat upon Boston City, a 6-0 reverse in 2018. Two years earlier, a 5-2 midweek Italians win in Brooklyn was followed by a 1-0 Boston City victory thanks to a Michael Bustamante goal in the return game. The sides did not play in 2017 and met only once the following season when Clement Bourret and Matthew McDonnell each scored a pair of goals, while the Lions were toothless by comparison and rarely threatened the away keeper. Rasmus Hansen and James Thristino completed a miserable evening for Boston City who used three goalkeepers in the match. Colan Balkwell was replaced at halftime with the score at 2-0, Vitor Scariot was forced off through injury during the second half and defender Jadson Leite took over between the posts.

There have been 25 different goal scorers in Boston City FC history, including one own goal, and on top of that list is attacking midfielder Isaac Addai. Having joined from the Rhode Island Reds, where he had been the NPSL MVP and co-top scorer, Nana lit up the 2017 season with 12 NPSL goals and one in the U.S. Open Cup and was named the Ironsides Crew supporters’ player of the year. He scored four more times in 2018, giving him a club-best total of 17.

Homero Morais comes in next with 10 goals scored during three seasons, and he was the club’s top scorer in 2016 with 7 strikes. Jhonata Batista is one goal behind with 9, though he also found the target regularly with Boston City FC II in the Bay State Soccer League in 2018 and scored twice in the U.S. Open Cup qualifying stages. They are followed by Michael Bustamante (6), Kevin Herrera (4) and Yaw Addow, Gabriel De Souza, Michael Rincon and Darlan Rocha, who have all found the net three times.

Addai also leads the club in assists, having made 7 during his impressive 2017 campaign and one more in 2018. Batista has 5, Bustamante and Herrera 4 each, and 2016 midfielder Jadilson Vieira has 3.

A total of 69 players have pulled on the Boston City FC jersey in competitive action and nobody has made more appearances than defender Marcelo Cunha, who has played in 39 matches out of a possible 42, totaling 3,305 minutes. In 2016, Marcelo established himself as a key member of the back four, forming a formidable center half partnership with Gabriel De Souza, who is second on the appearances list with 2,977 minutes played.

They are followed by Homero Morais (2,682), Isaac Addai (2,156) and Ronaldo Vieira (2,019). At the opposite end of the list, goalkeeper Michael Russo-Penta sat on the Lions bench several times in 2017 without making an appearance. Defender David Lima has played the fewest number of minutes of any Boston City player with 13, having come off the bench away to TSF in his only appearance in 2018.

In a more dubious stat, 41 players (and coaches) have seen either yellow or red cards in three seasons and jointly leading the accumulation of yellow cards are former captain Ronaldo Vieira and uncompromising defender Jadson Leite, each with 10 and one sending off. Former head coach Palhinha took three early trips to the locker room during his time in charge of the Lions.
