Lions Tamed By Ruthless Italians

Boston City FC slumped to a heavy home defeat, conceding seven goals for the first time in the club’s four-year history as the Brooklyn Italians won by a six-goal margin in Boston for the second year running.

7-1 was hardly the result the Lions hoped for when debuting at Hormel Stadium in Medford on a night highlighted by the attendance of youngsters from Medford Soccer, who served as ball kids and player escorts. Neither was it the ideal night for assistant coach Cesar Deossa, who deputized for suspended head coach Michael Bustamante, who was sent off in last weekend’s 2-0 home loss to Greater Lowell.

Just like last week, Boston City finished the match with only nine players. Following Bustamante and Samuel Deossa from last week, Avner Alves picked up a harshly awarded second yellow card as the match finally slipped from the Lions’ grasp and Charlie Muhlauri walked for injury time comments made to the referee while also riding a yellow card.

Despite the result, things might have been different had Boston City taken a clear scoring chance having pulled a goal back after 66 minutes. With his side trailing 3-0 after halftime, John Dumbuya rose to head in the first Lions home goal of the season and his team-best fourth of the campaign from Santi Cardona’s cross.

Brooklyn gave away possession from the restart and Riad El Moukhtari should have added an immediate second goal to give his side hope but squandered a golden chance. Then the hosts fell apart.

Alves’ night was already done and the ruthless Italians doubled their lead, going 6-1 ahead in the space of only five minutes as Vittorio Argeri, Thomas Sucheki and James Greco all scored. Substitute Christo Charalambous rubbed salt into the wound with a seventh Brooklyn goal after 78 minutes.

The likelihood of the Lions recording only a second win of the season had looked bleak just 24 seconds into the match when a William Balanta error let James Thristino in behind the defense and he opened the scoring.

Patrick Guier fired a free kick past the despairing grasp of keeper Jake Wagmeister after Alves had fouled and picked up his first yellow card to make it 2-0 after 11 minutes.

The hosts showed flashes of promise with Dumbuya forcing keeper Jose Domingo into a flying reflex save and Ben Manoogian shooting just wide. But the glimpses of Boston City optimism paled in comparison to the Brooklyn dominance and an inevitable third goal arrived three minutes before halftime through Clement Bourett.
