Lions Concede Added Time Equalizer In 2-2 Home Draw With NYAC

In a moment typical of a frustrating season, Boston City said farewell to the 2019 National Premier Soccer League campaign by conceding a goal deep into added time to share the points at home to New York Athletic Club.

The Lions twice led through goals from Pablo Guimaraes and Jhonata Batista, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw against an opponent that has always been a thorn in their side. Boston City have never managed to beat a team that rarely challenges for honors in three attempts at home and has beaten NYAC only once in seven meetings.

Delayed by 65 minutes due to a storm that swept through Boston, unleashing thunder, lightning and flooding, an entertaining first half came to a dramatic conclusion. Guimaraes, who missed the last two Boston City matches and was making only his second appearance, lofted a high cross from the right after collecting a quickly-taken throw in and the ball sailed over keeper Tyron Matuta into the top corner of the goal. The visitors protested, believing a handball should have been awarded before the restart, but to no avail and the Lions led 1-0 at the break.

NYAC levelled after 71 minutes in a free kick from the left and a glancing header from Travis Blair was enough to steer the ball past Jason Katz. The home keeper had emerged at halftime to replace starter Sandro van Kuijck with the pair sharing equal playing time, as they had in the away fixture in New York.

Three minutes later the Lions led again. Tommason D’Agostino and Guimaraes exchanged passes, Pedro Silva played a long through ball to a wide-open Batista and he clipped a neat finish over the advancing keeper.

A tired home starting eleven noticeably needed fresh legs, but Jonathan Argueta remained sidelined until nine minutes from time and Samuel Deossa was unexplainably benched for the entire match.

Batista should have added to his team-best five goals this season and wrapped up the points by making it 3-1, but screwed his finish well wide after a collecting an unselfish pass from the livewire Guimaraes with ten minutes remaining.

Katz denied Blair to preserve the narrow lead and with the visitors piling everything forward, including a wandering keeper, referee Randall Kelley determined six minutes of added time were necessary despite few interruptions to the half.

Katz denied an equalizer with half the injury time played but was powerless to keep out a curling Nicholas Melo finish a minute later as two points were lost. With NYAC pressing for the win, Katz somehow helped a point blank header onto the bar and the loose ball was then cleared as Boston City ended up escaping with a draw.
